Former Senators in the second, third and fourth Republics, Monday put their weight behind the zoning of the 10th Senate Presidency to the South.

Speaking at a press conference in Abuja, a representative of the former lawmakers in the upper legislative Chamber, Senator Basheer Lado, said their decision followed extensive consultations across board, which indicated that zoning to the South-South would serve equity and fairness.

Lado stressed that the office of the President is statutorily positioned as third in the hierarchy, hence, it carries considerable weight in vital constitutional responsibilities.

He said: “In the spirit of equity, fairness, political expediency and following extensive consultations with stakeholders, we hereby express our total support for the zoning of the position of the President of the 10th Senate, to the South-South geo-political zone of Nigeria.”

The ex-lawmakers averred that there was a need for the occupier of the office to enjoy the support of the party leadership and that of his colleagues as he faces sensitive issues in the course of discharging his responsibilities.

They commended the outgoing President for serving eight years, saying that “President Muhammadu Buhari has provided exceptional leadership over a very challenging period of the country’s national journey.
