Seun Kuti, the youngest son of renowned legendary Afrobeat pioneer, Fela Anikulapo Kuti, has said the attention his father’s music is currently enjoying wouldn’t be much as such if he was alive.
Fela, through his music fought against oppression and bad governance in Nigeria. Seun held that his father’s songs are still not enjoying much airplays in the media.
The respected musician and activist said this during his interview with Guardian Life, where he shared his path to activism and relayed on the new strategy used by the oppressors to oppress the masses.
Seun said, the oppressors now practice the system of exclusion, which is totally different from the crude way it used to be in the past. “The new way of oppressing people that speak the truth today is exclusion… My message contradicts the message of the elites…Even now, Fela is not played often in the media. If Fela was around now, it would be difficult for his music to rise like it did because there is so much distraction”.
“The oppressors always look to perfect oppression. They practice a system of exclusion. Back in the days, they used to be crude but they have realised that it only makes you popular. So they own everything and exclude you from it.”
“It is not enough to say you love Africa, you need to know about Africa.”
Seun Kuti, who is also like his father when it comes to being vocal against bad governance, recently said he would have participated in the attack that was carried out by the IPOB on the immediate past Deputy Senate President of Nigeria, Ike Ekweremadu if he was in Europe where it happened.
“What I would say is that next time any group of Nigerians are planning to beat up any Nigerian politician, and they don’t let me know about it, I will be very offended. That is the only thing I have to say about that because I was in Europe. The more hands, the merrier,” said.
