The international future of Chelsea winger Noni Madueke appears to no longer be in doubt following talks with the head coach of the senior national team of England, OwnGoalNigeria.com reports.
Eligible for Nigeria and England, he has represented England at various youth levels and he is presently with the U21 team of England at the U21 European Championship. Despite that he has always insist on leaving his options open at senior level.
In 2021 after an explosive performance for his former team PSV in the Dutch League, he was asked about his international future and he said it’s all in the air with Nigeria an option for him. Even last year he was rumoured to have been contacted by the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF).
He appears to have killed that thought after a chat with the coach of the senior national team of England Gareth Southgate, who assured him that once he gets regular run of games at Chelsea, he will be considered for a call up.
“And if I play week in, week out next season, I will be in contention for a senior team call-up. I’ve spoken to Gareth [Southgate] and the door is open”, he said.
“Being a Chelsea legend, playing for England and scoring goals comes with it, but I just want to be seen as a player that inspired. I want people to look back on my career and think, ‘Wow, Noni was unbelievable’. I want them to be in awe.”
