Ten students from the Federal University of Lafia in Nasarawa State were kidnapped by bandits in the early hours of Thursday in the Gandu village, some two kilometres from the school.
A resident of the neighbourhood who requested anonymity told reporters that the attackers stormed the student community opposite the university’s permanent location at around 2 a.m. on Thursday, shooting intermittently into the air and sending students fleeing for safety.
The operation, according to the insider, took roughly two hours.
When speaking to journalists in Lafia on the incident, the Public Relations Officer of the University, Abubakar Ibrahim, said the total number of students abducted had yet to be ascertained.
He said, “It is too early to ascertain the exact number of students because those affected are not living within the school, but off campus.”
Meanwhile, university students had launched a peaceful protest calling for an end to the ongoing kidnapping of their colleagues.
It should be emphasized that there have been numerous abductions of university students in recent years.
The state government, in concert with security agencies, had prepared several times to prevent further attacks on the institution, but the kidnappers continued their actions unabated till now.
The state Police command’s Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Ramhan Nansel, said the details of the kidnap were still sketchy.
