Head coach of Dutch giants Ajax Amsterdam Maurice Steijn has revealed the real reason why he wants Nigeria international defender Calvin Bassey to leave the club before the end of the summer transfer window, OwnGoalNigeria.com reports.
A summer signing from Rangers one year ago, Bassey has found it hard to properly settle at the Dutch side and was subsequently put up for sale with Ajax agreeing a fee of €21m for his transfer to English Premier League side Fulham.
The Nigerian is however not keen on leaving and hasn’t held talks with the English side over a move. He is wary of the fact that they might not offer him much by way of salary like he currently earns at Ajax. That grey area is a factor why the move hasn’t materialize yet.
Speaking on the decision to show the 23 year old the exit door, Steijn said it’s because he isn’t in his plans for next season and the club also needs the money from his expected departure to strengthen the team. He said he has already communicated his decision to Bassey.
” I told Calvin Bassey it would be better to leave Ajax. Also because of the money. When he leaves — we can strengthen the squad properly. I have told him this honestly”, told Mike Verweij of Telegraaf.
