Following his record breaking move from Rangers of Scotland to Dutch giants Ajax Amsterdam, Calvin Bassey immediately joined his new teammates in training.
However the Nigeria international is yet to get a game in pre season despite the fact that he was primarily signed to fill the void created by the departure of a first team player in Lisandro Martinez.
Bassey was once again missing from the list of players called up for yesterday’s 3-1 win over Ukraine side Shakhtar Donetsk, and this time around technical manager of the team Gerry Hamstra was pushed to provide an explanation.
“Calvin Bassey is fit, but not yet eligible to play. That’s what Ajax technical manager Gerry Hamstra said just before the game with Shakhtar Donetsk.
“Bassey’s work permit has to be arranged and so the defender can’t play for Ajax yet.
Hamstra also quelled fears in certain quarters who suggested that the club is probably not impressed by the Nigerian after seeing him closely during training the last few days.
“He didn’t play in the biggest competition, but he has been in the Europa League final. From his build-up via Leicester City to Rangers, he has made rapid development and we think he can develop even further. He is available immediately, but there are more. The selection is wide, so he will also have to fight, but this is someone who brings our specific qualities,” says Hamstra to Ziggo Sport.
