Awoniyi rules self out of Dortmund clash

Nigeria’s Taiwo Awoniyi will sit out of Mainz 05 next Bundesliga fixture against Borussia Dortmund on Tuesday as he recuperates from a head injury.

The Nigeria Youth international was taken to the hospital from the pitch after suffering a concussion in Mainz 05 weekend defeat to Augsburg.

According to his statement from the club’s official website, Awoniyi who is still recovering from the head injury, confirmed he won’t be available for next league game.

“I’d like to thank the medical staff at Mainz 05 and at the Unimedizin Mainz, for they looked after me very well. And I’d like to thank God for protecting me in this situation and for making everything possible for me anyway.

“Unfortunately, I won’t be available to help the team against Dortmund, but I will support them regardless. Together we will give our all for the fans and avoid relegation, of that I’m sure,” he submitted.
