Arsenal ended their preseason friendly matches (which included sojourns to the United States, France and spain) with a visit to the nou camp to lock horns with Spanish heavyweights Fc Barcelona, with controversial striker Luis Suarez slotting a decisive half-volley at the 89th minute to seal the victory for the hosts.
Once again the north London outfit’s attacking qualities were on display with the marquee duo of mesut Ozil and Pierre- emerick Aubameyang proving a handful for the Barcelona back- line marshaled by Arsenal target Samuel umtiti with both Arsenal stars combining well for the opener. A through ball from the much- maligned Ozil evading two Barcelona players enroute making contact with Aubameyang who expertly allowed the ball slid past him before swiftly slamming the ball past Andre ten stegen, putting Arsenal in the ascendancy.
The bane of Arsenal’s existence for the past two campaigns though has always been their immature and lacklustre back line that possesses the propensity to more often than not figuratively shoot themselves in the foot with their comical defending and the second half of this encounter proved likewise as Barcelona drew level not by any spectacular play on their end but a Maitland-Niles own goal. The Arsenal youngster’s good showing in the match marred by a moment he would love to forget.
Like a great white shark sensing blood, the home side piled on the pressure relentlessly and the substitution of Luis Suarez eventually proving fortuitous with the Uruguayan hassling the gunners back line and Inevitably scoring a spectacular winner via a half volley, the Arsenal defense caught unawares once more with an over the top sergi Roberto pass.
With the end of the English transfer window less than a week away, the Gunners will have to revisit the transfer market once more for a defensive acquisition or two if they’re to have any hope of a top four finish and qualification to the elite European competition, the UEFA Champions League, after a three season absence. Arsenal proving once more how the phrase”flashy like a LAMBORGHINI in attack, comical like a broken tricycle in defense” applies to them.
