Former Chelsea left back Celestine Babayaro says out of favour Chelsea defender Fikayo Tomori is feeling the effect of playing for England very early into his career in the English top flight league.

Tomori made his senior international bow for England on the 18th of November in 2019 coming on as a substitute in a European qualifiers game against Kosovo after impressing in his first few games for Chelsea in the English Premier League.

Since then he has struggled to match same height with Chelsea that led to his maiden and only call up. He is now Chelsea’s fifth choice centre back following the arrival of Thiago Silva in the summer.

Babayaro told Owngoalnigeria.com in an exclusive chat that playing for England when he was just making inroads into the first team of Chelsea affected his career as expectations went high hence putting him under pressure.

“ It’s a combination of several issues but I personally think it’s down to playing for England at a very young stage in his career. The pressure that comes with it is that people now expect a lot and it can also make the player crack “, he said.

“ You see the aim is to play for England at senior level and when that happens it requires a lot to keep the player grounded and humble. Tomori is in that boat base on my observation”.
