The third Ekiti State Youth Parliament has advocated for one-year vocational/technical education for secondary school leavers to make them self-reliant as well as tackle the problem of unemployment in the country.
The call was part of the resolution of the parliament at a sitting at the State House of Assembly in Ado Ekiti, the state capital, to mark the 2021 International Youth Day.
The Speaker of the Youth Parliament, Rt. Hon. Oluwatoba Fatunla, stressed the need for parents and guardians to encourage their children to embrace technical education and vocational training.
The Youth Parliament also resolved that at least 40 percent of people in government at all levels must be youths under the age of 40 and emphasized the importance of “youth inclusion” in governance.
Passing a vote of confidence on the State governor, Dr. Kayode Fayemi, for what they described as his giant strides in the development of the state, the Youth Parliament however called for the provision of subvention to all registered youth organizations in the state.
The parliament furthermore solicited the sponsorship of well to do individuals, corporate, non-governmental organizations and government at all levels for capacity training for youths in the state to boost their self-reliance.
The Commissioner for Youth and Sports Development, Mr. Michael Awopetu, had earlier highlighted activities slated to mark the International Youth Day to include lecture, symposium and general discussion at the Trade Fair Complex, a Road Show/Walk from Textile Junction to the Trade Fair Complex by all youth organizations in the state.
