Lewis Hamilton is set to be awarded a knighthood in the New Year’s Honours list after clinching his seventh Formula One World Championship and equalling the overall tally of Michael Schumacher

The record-breaking seven time Formula One World Champion is set to receive the highest honour from the Queen as he continues to thrive as one of the UK’s greatest sportsman in history.

The 35-year-old, who has continued to support the Black Lives Matter movement in highlighting human rights issues across the globe, had previously noted what an honour it would be.

He said earlier this year: “I think when I think about that honour, I think about people like my grandad who served in the war, I think about Sir Captain Tom who got knighted and waited a hundred years for that incredible honour.”

The Sun have reported that Hamilton will be rewarded for his contribution to sport with a knighthood, after he was made an MBE back in 2009 after his first world title.

He said at the time: “It was one of the most overwhelming experiences I’ve ever had. Before adding: “I don’t think you realise until you’re standing in front of her how special it is.

“The Queen said she watched very closely the last few laps. She was asking about the car. The pressure’s on now. She’ll be watching as I go into the first race.”

He said: “I get knocked by many people, particularly older drivers. I don’t know why.

“Maybe one day they will get over it but I have so much respect for the past legends, even those who continue to talk negatively about me all the time. I still hold them in high regard

“In 20 years’ time when I am looking back, I can promise you this, I will not be talking down any young driver who is coming through and succeeding.

“Because a responsibility as an older driver is to shine the light as bright as possible and encourage those.”
