Manchester United legend, Rio Ferdinand, has hit back at critics of Mason Greenwood.

The young Englishman has come in for a lot of criticism over his actions in Iceland while on international duty.

He has been in and out of the United team this season as well.

But he scored a stunning opening goal on Wednesday against RB Leipzig and was in good form throughout the contest, which United won 5-0.

“I just don’t feel some of the young players get the protection sometimes that they should be getting,” Ferdinand told BT Sport.

“Either from the club, or people around them maybe.

“Listen, he’s a young kid, he may have made a mistake. That’s part and parcel of life. He’s a teenager. He’ll make more mistakes.

“I think he’s an intelligent footballer and that will follow suit off field too.”
