Manchester United are taking extra measures to protect endangered bats at their Carrington training ground.

The Red Devils had to call in experts to put together a special report regarding the endangered nocturnal animals at the facility.

United wanted to install more lights for their training pitches, but experts worried about what that would do to the local bat population.

According to The Sun, special shields will be set up along with floodlights to ensure that players can train on those pitches when it gets dark, but the bats also have their environment protected.

The planning report conclusion stated: “The woodland boundary features of the wider site offer high quality bat foraging and commuting habitat.

“At least six species of bat forage and commute around/over the area.

“In the absence of bat-sensitive lighting features, such spillage could impact upon regularly-used foraging and commuting routes, as identified by the survey.

“It is therefore recommended that the flood lighting columns all be fitted with hoods or shields in order to prevent upwards and backwards light spillage.

“The lighting must be directed downwards to retain darkness above. It should be turned off when not in use.

“It is recommended that the LEDs used be of a warm white spectrum.”
