More woe for West Brom as Boro move into playoff places – Sporting Life

Middlesbrough climbed into the Championship playoff places as they came from behind to beat West Brom 2-1 to leave Steve Bruce still waiting for his first win as Baggies boss on Tuesday.

Boro have won seven in a row at home as they have surged into the promotion race since Chris Wilder took charge in November.

West Brom’s change of manager has not had the same impact with just one point from Bruce’s first four games.

The visitors did manage their first goal in a month when Jayson Molumby opened the scoring on 28 minutes.

But Middlesbrough fought back with goals from Paddy McNair and Marcus Tavernier, closing the gap on Bournemouth in the second automatic promotion place to six points.

West Brom are six points outside the playoffs down in 11th.

Coventry gave their playoff chances a boost with a 2-1 win at Bristol City thanks to Viktor Gyokeres’s 89th-minute winner to move up to eighth.

Nottingham Forest are four points off the top six after being held 0-0 at Preston.

At the other end of the table, Reading secured a huge three points in their battle to beat the drop with a 2-1 win over Birmingham in Paul Ince’s first game as manager.

The Royals move eight points clear of Wayne Rooney’s Derby in the bottom three.
