The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has destroyed expired and fake goods worth over N16 billion in Ogun State.
The goods were destroyed on Thursday at the Oke-Diya dump site in the Sagamu Local Government Area of the state.
Speaking during the demolition exercise, the Director-General of NAFDAC, Prof Mojisola Adeyeye, disclosed that the exercise was part of the agency’s renewed efforts to rid Nigeria of unwholesome regulated products to safeguard the populace’s health.
Adeyeye, who was represented by NAFDAC’s Director of Investigation and Enforcement, Mr Francis Ononiwu, stated that the exercise became necessary to prevent the products’ re-introduction into the market.
She said the products were substandard and falsified medical products, unsafe cosmetics, unwholesome processed food additives and counterfeits, and other NAFDAC-regulated products.
While some of the products were seized by the agency from manufacturers, importers, and distributors, others were voluntarily handed over to NAFDAC by compliant companies, trade unions, and non-governmental organisations.
“NAFDAC has been charged with the responsibility of ensuring that the health of the nation is safeguarded, and as such, it is committed to eliminating expired medical products, illicit drugs, unwholesome foods, chemicals, and other violative products,” she said.
