Nigeria goalie Akpeyi bounces back with Kaizer Chiefs

Daniel Akpeyi showed why Kaizer Chiefs fans preferred him in goal after he kept a clean sheet in the team’s 1-0 win over Chippa United.

Akpeyi had been playing a second fiddle this season with coach Gavin Hunt preferring Itumeleng Khune in goal.

The South African international was in goal in Chiefs Dstv Premier League opening day loss to Mamelodi Sundowns and the MTN 8.

However, his unconvincing displays led to calls for him to be dropped, which Hunt heeded. The former Bidvest manager decided to hand Akpeyi a start in Chiefs second league game, and it was a decision that paid off as they secured a 1-0 win over Chippa United.

In a match they dominated from start to finish, it took an own goal from Gregory Damons thirteen minutes from time for Hunt’s men to secure the three points.

The result means Chiefs pick up their first league win of the new campaign following their opening day loss to last season champions.
