A Magistrate court sitting in Iwo Road area of Ibadan, Oyo state capital has sentenced a civil servant at the Ministry of Lands, Housing and Surveying, Mrs. Funmi Salako, to two-year imprisonment for defrauding a deaf and dumb man named Musibau Ilori to the tune of N1 million.
Salako was first arraigned before the court on June 5, 2017, on a three-count charge of conspiracy, obtaining and stealing.
The prosecutor, Sunday Ogunremi, told the court that the convict in October 2014 conspired with others to defraud a deaf and dumb Mr.Musibau Ilori by collecting the sum of N1million from him under the pretense to help him buy two acres of lands along Oyo/Ibadan expressway.
The prosecutor said the offense was contrary to Section 518 (6), 419 and section 390 (9) of the Criminal Code Cap 38 Vol.II laws of Oyo state of Nigeria, 2000 and punishable under the law.
Defense counsel to the defendant, Mrs. Florence Badmus prayed to the court to temper justice with mercy adding that she was the breadwinner of her family. Badmus told the court that the accused had already refunded N500,000 out of the money.
In his ruling, the Magistrate, Mr.Taiwo Oladiran sentenced her to two years imprisonment with an option of sixty thousand naira fine. He ordered the convict to reimburse the remaining of N500,000 within sixty days or serve her jail term.
