Residents of Mayo Selbe community in Gashaka Local Government Area of Taraba State are presently counting their losses following the havoc wrecked by floods in the community.

The floods, which followed a heavy downpour on Friday, destroyed valuables worth millions of naira in the community which is located in Taraba Central Senatorial District.

Some victims who spoke to thedabigal appealed to relevant authorities and organizations to, as a matter of urgency, come to their rescue.

One of the victims, who did not wish to be named, said, “I have not seen this type of flood before. We can get over this. The National Emergency Management Agency, NEMA, should come to our aid.”

While some of the victims who have been displaced from their homes by the flood are presently taking shelter in public places, others, as noticed by our reporter, are being sheltered by friends and relatives in host communities.

The monarch of the community, Kum Thomas Maiyanga Shaibu, passionately appealed to the state and the federal governments to assist the victims to rebuild their destroyed houses.

Another monarch from the area, Wakili Sabanah Ibrahim, called on the government to come to the aid of the community, noting that the residents have lost virtually all their belongings

Visibly dejected, he said, “The victims have been subjected to untold hardship as a lot of them don’t have shelter and a place to lay their heads.”

Aside from the houses that were submerged by the flood, farm produce and domestic animals, among others, were observed to have been carried away by the flood.
