One of the startling revelations of last year was on loan Lorient defender Moritz Jenz revealing that he has Nigerian roots, a revelation that took a lot of people unaware considering the fact that he has always been refered to as a German.
”I qualify for Germany and Nigeria but I would prefer Germany because that’s where I grew up,” Jenz said as reported by GlasgowTimes.
In January he moved to German Bundesliga side Schalke 04 on another loan deal to further his development but it came with an obligation that he will be signed by the German team if they beat the drop to the second division. They were however relegated.
He came in and played in 11 of their games playing as a center back and not as a right back, the position he played for Fulham, Lausanne Sport, Lorient and Cletic in the past. The 24 year old did enough to convince another German team Wolfsburg that he deserves a permanent deal.
Six days ago, his signing was made official for €10m on a four year deal, and a strong performance next season will no doubt trigger another round of questions and suggestions around his international future, especially as he hasn’t been capped by either Germany or Nigeria at any level.
