Nigeria international forward Victor Osimhen once again showed his usefulness to the bid of Italian Serie A side Napoli to win the league with a late goal that earned them a 1-0 win over Roma.
Osimhen raced onto a pass from Matteo Politano with around ten minutes left to play in the game and from what looked like an impossible angle to score, he first of all did well to hold off his marker in Chris Smalling before an angle shot for what ended as the match winner.
It also means they keep their three points lead at the top over league defending champions AC Milan after 11 rounds of matches. For Osimhen it’s the third straight game that he has scored since his return from injury. He now has four goals from seven games this season.
Reacting to the goal, European football governing body UEFA took to their Twitter handle to celebrate the goal by terming the Nigerian as phenomenal in a post immediately after the game ” Osimhen is phenomenal”, a tweet on their official handle reads.
The coach of Roma Jose Mourinho also said the Nigerian striker was the difference maker in the tie where he believed his team deserved at least a draw after their battling performance. ” Osimhen scored from where many thought he couldn’t and it was the difference. Credit to him”, he said.
Legendary Italian and former Napoli forward Gianfranco Zola also shared the same sentiment by describing the goal scored by the Nigerian as an extraordinary finish with the way he held off Smalling before rifling his effort home.
“Spalletti’s team has come up with a masterpiece: the Politano’s pass is exceptional, and Osimhen does an extraordinary thing, overcoming Smalling and shooting in an exceptional way”, he said while speaking as a guest of the ‘Domenica Sportiva’, broadcast on Rai Due.
