UK prepares to remove Nigeria, others from COVID-19 red list
Nigeria is expected to be removed from the UK’s red list and travel bans imposed due to fears of the Omicron variant.
According to the Guardian UK, all 11 nations on England’s travel blacklist will be removed from it as of 4:00 a.m. on Wednesday, as fears of Omicron cases being brought into the country lessen.
Sajid Javid, the UK’s health secretary, announced on Wednesday that a mandatory hotel quarantine for travellers from several southern African countries will be lifted.
Instead, all visitors to England will be free to isolate themselves at home. They can be released with a negative PCR test conducted within two days of arrival if they have been double-vaccinated. If they don’t, they’ll have to stay at home for ten days and take a test on day two and another on day eight or later.
In parliament on Tuesday, Javid stated that the red list would be cleared as it had become “less effective in slowing the incursion of Omicron from abroad.”
However, the requirement to get tested before departure would remain in place, he said.
