Genk of Belgium striker Paul Onuachu has been told by the coach of the Nigerian team Gernot Rohr to produce his club form at national team level if he wants to keep his spot in the squad.
Onuachu started the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations as first choice striker ahead of the duo of Odion Ighalo and Victor Osimhen but with Ighalo quitting international football, Osimhen is now first choice striker.
The lanky forward is however making a big statement in Belgium with 23 goals in 27 games this season making him the top scorer in the league. A form Rohr hopes he brings to the national team soon.
Rohr in an interview with NewsCentral listed the attacking department of the Super Eagles as one area where he has several options with the likes of Terem Moffi, Taiwo Awoniyi and Sadiq Umar getting a mention.
His statement should serve as a warning to the former FC Midtjylland man who has just one goal from 8 international games for Nigeria from 2019 till date.
“ There are all the time new players who try to show us their qualities all the time. When you look at this young player in Lorient Moffi, he scored the winning goal against PSG and scored a brace against Monaco and he is left footed. It will be interesting to see him when the time is favourable.
“Then we have also Awoniyi playing in Union Berlin, he is a good one then we have also in Spain for Almeria Sadiq Umar, who was the player of the month. We have also Onuachu who is playing and scoring lot of goals for his team in Belgium but has problem when he plays for Nigeria. We have lot of strikers.
