Middlesbrough forward Chuba Akpom has been rewarded for his fine performances this season with the award of the best player in the English Championship for the month of December.

The 27 year old is enjoying a new lease of life at club level under Michael Carrick, six months after it seems he was on his way out of the club. This season he has thrived in a new role behind the striker with 13 goals in 19 games.

Akpom hit the net four times in December, including an excellent hat-trick against Wigan Athletic at a sold-out Riverside on Boxing Day. He is currently the top scorer in the English second division.

He picked up the award which is selected by Sky Sports’ EFL expert Don Goodman, EFL Chief Executive Trevor Birch and Sky Bet EFL trader Ivor Davies earlier today. He was named PFA Player of the Month in November and has been nominated for the same award in December.

Tipped to be a part of the Super Eagles squad for the AFCON qualifiers in March, he has already received the all clear from FIFA to switch to Nigeria after representing England at several youth levels.
