Tottenham have reached agreement for the 18-month loan of Gedson Fernandes from Benfica with an option to make the transfer permanent.

The 21-year-old has been handed the number 30 shirt at Spurs, who will have the option to make his move permanent at the end of the 2020-21 season.

Fernandes had attracted interest from other Premier League clubs, including Spurs’ rivals West Ham , but becomes Jose Mourinho’s first signing at Tottenham.

It is believed the deal involving Fernandes includes an option for Tottenham to buy the player at the end of the loan for £56million.

Mourinho moved for Fernandes to help boost his midfield options, with Moussa Sissoko facing a lengthy injury layoff, and Christian Eriksen set to depart in the summer.
