Former Newcastle United manager, Sam Allardyce, has revealed his ‘worry’ over Chelsea’s record-breaking January signing, Enzo Fernandez.
Allardyce said Chelsea took a ‘huge risk’ by signing Fernandez in a record-breaking deal and ‘doubts’ their manager Graham Potter had a say in the transfer.
Fernandez became the most expensive signing in English Premier League history when he completed a £107 million move to Chelsea from Benfica.
The 22-year-old only joined Benfica last summer but caught the eye of some clubs with his performances for Argentina at the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar.
After joining Chelsea, Fernandez said he wanted to help take the Blues to ‘the next level’.
The Argentina World Cup winner made his Premier League debut for Chelsea in their goalless draw with Fulham last Friday.
“Chelsea’s signing of Enzo Fernandez worries me,” Allardyce said on William Hill and Footy Accumulators’ podcast, No Tippy Tappy Football.
“What if it doesn’t work? What a commitment it is for eight years because, obviously, the league has not shut that loophole down yet.
“It’s £107 million – it is a huge risk for the club, and particularly for the manager [Potter], who will get the blame if it doesn’t work. I don’t think Fernandez was his choice.”
