Former Chelsea left back Celestine Babayaro says Arnold Groeneveld Danjuma didn’t cover himself in glory as he used Nigeria to catch the attention of the Dutch national team.
Danjuma voiced out his frustration of not getting a call up to the Dutch team, three years after his last game hinting that a switch of nationality to Nigeria could be his best bet of playing international football at a high level.
One month after his statement, the 24 year old was handed a recall up to the Dutch team by coach Louis Van Gaal and he responded with a goal against Gibraltar. Babayaro felt it was his aim to use Nigeria as a bait all this while.
“I think it’s more of what the guy in Denmark ( Philip Billing) did. Reach out to Nigeria through the media and get the attention of the country you truly want to play for. I really don’t think it’s the smart thing to do. Danjuma knew what he was doing all along”, Babayaro told OwnGoalNigeria.com.
“Players and their representatives should learn to treat the fans with respect. Danjuma would have still gotten a chance with the Dutch team since he was doing well at Villarreal but he wasn’t patient hence the media stunt to get the call up”, he concluded.
