France has become the latest nation to limit the number of spectators at football matches with new Covid rules announced Monday limiting outdoor gatherings to just 5,000 people.
French Prime Minister Jean Castex has moved in response to the rapid spread of the Omicron variant, which has hit much of Europe and has coincided with multiple Covid outbreaks especially among Premier League clubs in England.
Monday’s new measures, for at least the next three weeks, limit all public gatherings to 2,000 people for indoor events and 5,000 for outdoor events.
Although the strain appears milder than previous variants, officials in France have warned hospitals are being overwhelmed after a record 100,000 positive test results reported on Saturday.
The figures are the highest daily levels in France since the start of the pandemic almost two years ago.
It follows similar measures taken in Germany, where 15,000 fans are now restricted to Bundesliga matches under rules introduced earlier in December.
Scotland has imposed even stricter restrictions where football pitches are limited to just 500 supporters to attend matches from Boxing Day.
Celtic fans clashed with police in an attempt to watch their side’s showdown against St Johnstone at Perth’s McDiarmid Stadium.

Meanwhile, despite talks on Monday, Boris Johnson has ruled out any immediate restrictions in England, leaving the Premier League grounds at full capacity.
Sajid Javid confirmed England would go it alone in its decision to quell the fire by pressing the panic button: ‘There will be no further measures before the new year.’ He told Sky News: ‘It is up to each country that is part of the UK to decide how it wants to proceed.’
