Dutch great Ruud Gullit believes Cristiano Ronaldo will decide whether he stays or leaves Manchester United this summer.

The former Chelsea boss believes even incoming manager Erik ten Hag won’t have as big an influence as Ronaldo himself.

Gullit said on Ziggo Sport: “Do I expect Ronaldo to continue at Manchester United? It all depends on Ten Hag’s plans.

“We shall see. I think Ronaldo himself decides whether he stays or not, and not Ten Hag. What he has accomplished with Manchester United… yet again beyond expectations.

“Certainly when you consider that the team is not running at all. He scored a lot of goals that were important for United. In any case, it has not been his fault this season. But of course it is very annoying for him to constantly have to hear that he would stop the youth and that the team would only be busy with him. But because everyone was only busy with him, he did deliver Real Madrid the Champions League three times (four times).

“It’s very annoying for a player to get a lot of criticism when you give everything and score so many goals.

“What would I do if I were Ten Hag? Of course I would keep him. I’m sorry, but he’s scoring goals for you. Why not? At Ajax there are always important players who always have to play. Just look at Dusan Tadic, he always has to play. In any formation. You just build a team around such players. It’s the same with Ronaldo.”
