Premier League chief executive Richard Masters has revealed that they are considering a request made by the wife of a journalist allegedly killed by the Saudi Arabian regime to stop Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman from buying Newcastle United.

Hatice Cengiz, wife of the journalist Jamal Khashoggi, who was allegedly killed at the Istanbul consulate by Saudi agents, wrote to the Premier League to ask them to stop Newcastle from being bought by a consortium involving Mohammed bin Salman in a deal worth more than 300 million pounds.

In a letter seen by the BBC, Masters has assured Cengiz that her words are being taken fully into account.

The purchase of Newcastle, currently owned by businessman Mike Ashley, has been stalled for several weeks, with associations such as Amnesty International asking the Premier League to investigate Saudi Arabian records before giving the go-ahead to the deal.

Television operators like beIN Sports have also called for a halt to the purchase due to the piracy of Premier League matches taking place in the Arab country.
