Manchester United boss, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, will prioritise signing a new center-back next summer – but David Alaba and Dayot Upamecano are not under consideration.
The Red Devils have lots of firepower at the top of the pitch but have often been caught out at the back this term.
Victor Lindelof has established himself as Harry Maguire’s centre-back partner for the majority of this campaign.
But there are still question marks over the pair’s long-term ability to help the club challenge for the Premier League title.
Reports in recent weeks have suggested that Solskjaer would like to add some experience to his backline in the form of Bayern Munich’s David Alaba.
The 28-year-old is a serial winner having claimed nine Bundesliga titles and two Champions Leagues.

He is also out of contract in the summer so can sign a pre-agreement with a foreign club next month.
However, the Telegraph claims Solskjaer has no interest in Alaba and his side will not be joining the race which includes Real Madrid, Paris Saint-Germain, Manchester City and Chelsea.
It is no secret that United have been tracking RB Leipzig ace Dayot Upamecano for some time and considered a move this summer.
The Telegraph reports Solskjaer has dropped the France international from the top of his wishlist and he will look elsewhere.
There could be funds to bring in a new defender in the January window but the situation is similar to that of when Bruno Fernandes arrived at Old Trafford midway through last season.
Any funds used for a signing next month will be taken out of the summer budget.
United will attempt to ship out some of their fringe players with the likes of Marcos Rojo and Phil Jones expected to be moved on.
When addressing the upcoming transfer window, Solskjaer recent said: “It’s hard to predict [what] other teams [will do] and how the financial situation is
“If teams need to sell or if they’ve got money to buy. I don’t predict a lot of ins and outs.
“The world, financially, and in football, has changed as well also. It depends on how the injury situations are at different teams.”
Before United can strengthen their squad they have a busy festive period with a trip to Leicester on Boxing Day followed by a home match against Wolves on December 29.
