The Cross River State House of Assembly has called on the state’s Ministry of Environment and associated agencies to immediately begin to de-silt drainages in urban centres.
The assembly also cautioned the people of the state against perpetuating environmental hazards or emptying waste into gutters.
This follows the forecast by the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) and the warning by the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) on the impending flood danger and damages that may arise from the flood.
Cross River State was among the states most prone to flood dangers according to the NiMet forecast, which warned that this year’s will be more devastating than last year’s.
Addressing other lawmakers on Tuesday, the Speaker of the Assembly, Elvert Ayambem, assured residents of the state that the government was poised to tackle headlong the menace of flooding bedevilling the city.
A motion sponsored by Cyril James Omini, the member representing Yakurr 1 state constituency, had triggered the call for the Ministry of Environment and Waste Management Agency to rise to action.
Ayambem stressed that the state government will always be a step ahead in tackling adverse weather effects and the danger they pose to the state.
He also said that government is aware of its responsibility to evolve strategic methods that will improve the environment and guarantee a flood-free Cross River for all.
