Fringe Nigeria international Kelechi Nwakali has joined top division Portuguese side GD Chaves on a three year deal from relegated Spanish second division side Ponferradina, OwnGoalNigeria.com reports.

Ponferradina were relegated at the end of last season with Nwakali making 36 appearances with one goal and four assists to his name. The club revealed that he will be free to leave for a nominal fee, which has now been paid by Chaves.

The move brings an end to his three years stay in Spain, which has been far from rosy with his stint at top division side Huesca coming to an unceremonious end after returning late from the Africa Cup of Nations, where he represented Nigeria.

GD Chaves finished 7th last season in the Portuguese top division and the addition of the 25 year old former golden ball winner at the U17 World Cup is seen as one of the steps towards reinforcing the team for a better performance next season.

An official announcement of his signing is expected in the next few days after a routine medical as all parties have already agreed to the terms of the move. It will be his second spell in Portugal after spending time on loan to Porto B from Arsenal.

He will be hoping for better fortune this time around as he failed to stamp his feet as a regular for Porto B making 16 appearances mostly as a substitute.
