Werder Bremen right full back Felix Agu has explained why he decided to shun a chance with the senior national team of Nigeria and instead play for the U21 of Germany.
Agu as reported by this portal was approached by coach of the Super Eagles Gernot Rohr while he was still at second division side Vfl Osnabruck and yet to make an appearance for Germany at any level.
Rohr was keen on him after watching him excel in a game but the then 19 year old decided against honoring an invitation by Nigeria when Germany called him up to their U21.
Now 21 years old and making his mark at Weder Bremen with 14 appearances to his name this season in the Bundesliga, Agu who wasn’t picked by Germany for their campaign in the U21 Euros has now explained why he picked Germany ahead of Nigeria.
Question- You could still play for Nigeria despite your appearances for the German U21s . Have you already been in contact with the association and the German national coach Gernot Rohr?
Felix Agu – Yes, there was. But after my first appointment for a national team, i.e. the U21s, I first decided on Germany because I wanted to stay in my familiar environment. It felt better, but it wasn’t a decision against Nigeria.
