The reason behind the decision of Spanish second division side Ponferradina to sign Kelechi Nwakali has been revealed by coach of the team Jose Gomes.
Nwakali was signed on a free transfer following the termination of his contract by fellow Spanish second division side Huesca. His contract was terminated after a disagreement caused by his late arrival to Spain after representing Nigeria at the Africa Cup of Nations in January.
Huesca insist his excuse of not returning early wasn’t due to the illnes that he claimed and went ahead to terminate his deal. He contested it at the Spanish FA and a ruling is yet to be delivered.
Ponferradina announced his signing on a two year deal and as expected questions were asked about the rationale behind handing the 24 year old a deal at the club going by his not too impressive performance at Huesca.
Gomes explained he has tracked the player for a while and he even scored against his team while he was at Almeria. He also spoke about his playing style as another quality which endeared him to the Nigeria international.
“I knew him, he scored a goal against me when I was at Almería. In the U17 World Cup he was the best player in the tournament, and it was no coincidence. He is very intelligent, he knows how to take up space, he filters very good passes, he dribbles well and pull out”, the coach explained in an interview sourced by OwnGoalNigeria.com editorial team.
